A Yellowstone Motorsports feature on Honda’s next-generation 450-class motocross machine
Honda didn’t just update the CRF450R for 2027 – they completely reimagined it.
The 2027 Honda CRF450R is an all-new motocross machine featuring a redesigned engine, new chassis,
updated suspension, improved ergonomics, race-inspired styling, and technology developed alongside
Honda’s HRC factory racing program. Most importantly, it delivers an incredible 10.3% increase in peak
horsepower and 3.7% more peak torque, making it one of the most exciting CRF450R releases in years.
At Yellowstone Motorsports in Bozeman, Montana, we’re excited to bring the next generation of Honda
motocross performance to riders throughout Montana.
Built From Honda’s Championship Heritage
Honda has built one of the most successful motocross racing legacies in the world, and every lesson
learned on the racetrack helped shape the new CRF450R.
The 2027 model was developed with direct input from Honda’s HRC factory racing teams, resulting in a
motorcycle designed to deliver stronger acceleration, improved cornering, better stability, and increased
rider confidence.
Whether you’re racing every weekend, riding practice days, or simply chasing your fastest lap time, the new
CRF450R is engineered to help you ride at your best.
An All-New Engine Delivers Over 10% More Horsepower
The biggest headline for the 2027 Honda CRF450R is its completely redesigned 449.5cc Unicam engine.
Honda engineers didn’t simply tweak the previous platform – they developed an entirely new engine focused
on producing substantially more power while improving rideability, durability, and overall handling.
The result is a motorcycle that produces 10.3% more peak horsepower and 3.7% more peak torque than
the previous generation, making it one of the largest performance improvements in CRF450R history.
So where does all that extra power come from?
- Larger 97mm cylinder bore
- Shorter stroke for quicker revving
- Higher compression ratio
- Larger intake and exhaust valves
- Completely redesigned combustion chamber
- Lightweight forged piston
- Stronger and lighter crankshaft
- Redesigned Unicam valve train
- New intake and exhaust systems
- Updated ECU mapping
The new Unicam design aligns the intake and exhaust rocker shafts on a common axis, creating a more
rigid valvetrain while allowing Honda to build a narrower, lighter engine package.
Honda also redesigned the intake tract, reduced air-filter restriction, increased cooling capacity with a larger
radiator, and optimized airflow throughout the engine. The result is stronger acceleration, sharper throttle
response, a broader and more usable powerband, and improved traction exiting corners.
Instead of simply producing a bigger dyno number, the new engine is designed to help riders put that power
to the ground more efficiently, making the bike both faster and easier to ride.
Key Chassis Updates
- Revised frame flex characteristics
- Slightly increased steering rake
- Longer wheelbase
- Rearward footpeg position
- Improved weight distribution
These changes are designed to help the CRF450R corner more precisely, track straighter through rough
terrain, improve rear-wheel traction, increase stability at speed, and reduce rider fatigue during long motos.
A Completely New Chassis
The engine isn’t the only major redesign. Honda also developed an all-new aluminum twin-spar frame with
revised rigidity characteristics to improve handling and rider confidence.
Updated Suspension for Greater Control
Honda matched the new chassis with revised suspension settings designed specifically for the redesigned
motorcycle. The bike stays composed even when the track becomes rough late in the day.
- Improved front-end feel
- Better bump absorption
- Increased stability
- More predictable cornering
- Greater confidence through braking bumps, ruts, and whoops
New Hydraulic Clutch
One of the most rider-friendly upgrades is the addition of a hydraulic clutch. Inspired by Honda’s HRC race
bikes, the system provides a lighter pull, more consistent engagement, and no cable adjustments. Honda
also redesigned the clutch assembly to better handle the engine’s increased performance while improving
durability.
Smarter Electronics
The 2027 CRF450R continues to offer Honda’s advanced rider-adjustable electronics, allowing riders to
tailor power delivery to changing track conditions, rider preference, and race starts.
- Three Engine Modes
- Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC)
- Launch Control
- Gear-position-specific ECU mapping
Aggressive New Race-Inspired Styling
The redesigned CRF450R also receives completely updated styling inspired by Honda’s factory race team.
The result is a motorcycle that looks every bit as fast as it performs.
- New bodywork
- Slimmer ergonomics
- Aggressive graphics
- Blue rear fender
- Blue side number plates
- Black DID DirtStar wheels
- Improved rider movement
Built for Riders Who Want to Win
Whether you’re competing every weekend or simply trying to improve your lap times, the 2027 Honda
CRF450R is built to help you ride faster with more confidence.
The combination of a completely redesigned engine, over 10% more horsepower, a new chassis, updated
suspension, and advanced electronics makes this the most significant CRF450R Honda has introduced in
years.
